Chemistry lab, please help?

i have to design a lab by myself in chem cl and do the whole thing without any lab partners or anything. and i'm not very good with chemistry labs, like with the equipment and stuff. plus im even more rusty since summer. but i have to heat a beaker of water at various temperatures. so can someone please explain to me how to use a hot plate for that purpose? thanks.
