Can i get UI Benefits?

Okay i quit my job in may 13 of 2009 and i quit because of stress and famiily issues. I never filed for unemployment till now and some how some way i was awarded it. Can i get back payments from may up to now. Or do i only get UI benefits from the day that i applied? Or is it possible to get those backpayments some kind of way? and how?
