Really just freaked out and need some help?

OK so my best friend Meaghan and I were out walking at like 1 AM because that's just a habit of ours when she comes over since we're both night owls. We're both 19, We were walking down an unlit main road leading out of my neighborhood ( I live in a nice area so we felt safe) and all the sudden we see this car with four guys (probably twenty something,) and it was just sitting at the entrance to a little subdivision like it was waiting to get onto the road (there's no light or anything) and well...they sat and sat there, not moving, not talking, staring at us and we were trying to play it cool so we walked in front of the car and after we did they started pulling up really slow and we turned around. They drove up a little and then flipped around and came back really slow. That was enough for us and we booked it to a stone thing near where they came out and hid behind it and waited till they got far away and ran like B@#$%s for my other friend Nolan's house. They came back again and we decided to run and hide down a little footpath instead and called my mom and she met us at the main road and we hopped in her car and got the heck outta there. What were they doing? We thought maybe trying to scare us, but they never even smiled that we saw. Just starred us down. We've never heard of violent crime around here. And what should we have done differently?
