Christ promised the thief Paradise. Shouldn't we rethink our laws that punish stealing?

Christ didn't promise the thief paradise because he was a thief. He promised him he'd be in paradise because he asked for forgiveness, which is one of the basic tenets of Christianity. So no, stealing is still wrong, even in the eyes of whoever your God might be.
